Tunisia Sack Sabri Lamouchi After Heavy World Cup Opening Defeat to Sweden

3 days ago·1 min

Tunisia have dismissed head coach Sabri Lamouchi following a 5-1 thrashing at the hands of Sweden in their opening fixture of the 2026 World Cup, played in Guadalupe.

The Tunisian Football Association confirmed the decision in an official statement published on its Instagram account, announcing that an agreement had been reached to end Lamouchi's tenure with immediate effect.

"An agreement has been officially reached to dismiss coach Sabri Lamouchi. Plans are under way to appoint Mondher Kebaier as the national team coach on an interim basis."

Kebaier set to step in

According to the FA's statement, former Tunisia head coach Mondher Kebaier is being lined up to take charge of the Eagles of Carthage on a temporary basis as they look to recover from the opening-day setback.

Tunisia now face a difficult route back into contention in Group F. They meet Japan in their second group match on Saturday before a final group-stage encounter against the Netherlands.

A single defeat — particularly one as heavy as this — does not end Tunisia's hopes outright, but the margin of the loss will demand an immediate response from whoever leads the side in the coming days.
