Tyrique George Set for Permanent Everton Move as Chelsea Plan Squad Overhaul

1 hour ago·2 min

Everton are on the verge of completing a permanent transfer for Chelsea winger Tyrique George, with the two clubs renegotiating the terms of a deal that originally included a £25 million option to buy from his loan stint.

The 20-year-old joined Everton on loan for the second half of last season, making 11 appearances — only one of which came from the start. Despite limited game time, George left a strong impression on manager David Moyes.

In May, Moyes spoke warmly of the young winger, describing him as "an excellent boy" with an "excellent work-rate" when pressed on the prospect of a permanent signing ahead of the final match of the campaign. Everton have now renegotiated the original fee structure, replacing the flat £25 million buy option with a deal built around add-ons.

George's route to Goodison

A product of Chelsea's academy, George has been on the transfer market for the past 12 months. He held discussions with RB Leipzig last summer, and a £22 million switch to Fulham came close to completion before collapsing on transfer deadline day in September 2025.

Everton are also wrapping up further business, finalising a £16 million deal to bring Middlesbrough midfielder Hayden Hackney to the club. Attacking midfielder Merlin Rohl is set to make his loan move from SC Freiburg permanent, while Idrissa Gana Gueye and Seamus Coleman have both left the club after their contracts expired.

Chelsea's rebuild under Xabi Alonso

At Stamford Bridge, Chelsea are pushing forward with a wide-ranging squad rebuild under new manager Xabi Alonso. The club have secured Marco Palestra from Atalanta and are monitoring Crystal Palace's Maxence Lacroix, Como's Jacobo Ramon, and Rayo Vallecano full-back Pep Chavarria.

However, the need to reduce squad size is pressing. Chelsea finished 10th in the Premier League last season, missing out on European football entirely — a result that cuts into broadcasting revenue and matchday income. The situation is further complicated by a Uefa settlement agreement Chelsea must observe for the next three seasons, following a breach of financial regulations last summer.

Sales are expected to follow, with Real Madrid said to be interested in midfielder Enzo Fernandez. Como and Inter Milan are among clubs eyeing defender Trevoh Chalobah, while the futures of Benoit Badiashile, Tosin Adarabioyo, Wesley Fofana, Alejandro Garnacho, and Liam Delap all remain unresolved.
