Uganda is in mourning after David Owori, captain of Sports Club (SC) Villa and a prominent figure in the Uganda Cranes national team, was beaten to death by suspected robbers outside his home in the Kampala suburb of Makindye.
Police say the 27-year-old was ambushed on Tuesday night by a group of attackers who struck him with paving stones after he resisted an attempt to steal his mobile phone and other belongings. Owori was left unconscious at the scene before being rushed first to a nearby clinic and then to a private hospital in the city. He died of his injuries on Wednesday.
SC Villa spokesperson Asan Kasingye confirmed that Owori was targeted as he approached his home. "The player was ambushed by thugs as he approached his home, leaving him with life-threatening injuries before he was rushed to the medical facility," Kasingye said.
A leader on and off the pitch
Owori was a versatile defender and midfielder, widely known by his nickname Colgate, who captained SC Villa — the Uganda Premier League's record champions. He returned to the club in 2023 for a second spell, and his influence helped SC Villa claim their 17th top-flight title in 2024, their first league championship in 20 years. He had recently signed a contract extension keeping him at the club until January 2027.
Beyond club football, Owori represented the Uganda Cranes during the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign and was considered a strong candidate for future national team call-ups.
SC Villa paid tribute to their fallen captain. "We have lost more than a player — we have lost a leader, brother and friend," the club said in a statement.
The Federation of Uganda Football Associations (FUFA) described Owori as "a true leader on and off the pitch," adding that "David was not just a footballer. He was both a leader and an inspiration to a generation." Uganda Cranes said the team had lost a star who "carried the hopes of a nation."
Outrage and calls for justice
Parliament observed a minute of silence on Wednesday in Owori's honour and called for swift investigations. Local police spokesperson Rachael Kawala confirmed that detectives were pursuing leads and that the scene had been "documented and processed to ensure that all relevant evidence is collected and preserved."
The killing has ignited public anger across Uganda, with fans, teammates, and politicians demanding justice and calling for stronger action against violent crime in Kampala. The tragedy follows the death of another Ugandan sports star, rugby international Sydney Gongodyo, who was also fatally attacked by a mob in Kampala in recent weeks.
