Ugarte Named in Uruguay's World Cup Squad as Suarez Misses Out

5 days ago·2 min

Manchester United midfielder Manuel Ugarte has earned a place in Uruguay's 26-man squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, while veteran striker Luis Suarez has been left out by manager Marcelo Bielsa.

Ugarte is one of three Premier League players in the selection, joining Wolverhampton Wanderers defender Santiago Bueno and Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Rodrigo Bentancur in Bielsa's plans for the tournament in North America.

Suarez, 39, had hinted at an international comeback in recent months, suggesting he would come out of international retirement — a 20-month absence — if Uruguay needed him. Bielsa, however, has chosen not to recall the former Liverpool and Barcelona forward.

Nunez included despite limited minutes

Darwin Nunez has been selected despite going months without competitive football. The striker has not featured for Saudi Pro League side Al-Hilal since February, when the club was forced to restructure its foreign-player registrations following the arrival of former Ballon d'Or winner Karim Benzema.

Uruguay are placed in Group H and open their World Cup campaign against Saudi Arabia on 15 June, before facing Cape Verde and Spain.
