USA Dominate Paraguay as Canada Claim Historic World Cup Point

Day two of the 2026 FIFA World Cup brought goals, drama, and a slice of history, as co-hosts United States and Canada both entered the tournament on Friday.

Canada earn their first ever World Cup point

Canada opened their home World Cup campaign in front of a passionate crowd, with an opening ceremony that featured performances from Michael Bublé. On the pitch, however, it took a second-half comeback to give the Maple Leafs anything to celebrate.

Bosnia and Herzegovina were the stronger side in the first half, and Jovo Lukic's goal in the 21st minute put the Balkan side ahead at the break. Canada manager Jesse Marsch made an impact at half-time, and his side came out with renewed purpose after the interval.

The home side pushed relentlessly for an equaliser, and their persistence paid off in the 78th minute when Cyle Larin drew Canada level. From that point, Canada appeared the more likely winner — they finished the match with 60 percent of the possession and 13 shots to Bosnia and Herzegovina's eight.

Bosnia and Herzegovina, however, defended with discipline and determination, holding on for a 1-1 draw. For Canada, the result represents their first ever World Cup point — a landmark moment in the nation's football history, even if three points had been the goal.

USA put on a show under Mauricio Pochettino

Few had tipped United States as genuine contenders heading into this tournament, but Mauricio Pochettino's side silenced the doubters with a commanding 4-1 victory over Paraguay.

Folarin Balogun was the standout performer, scoring twice to drive the win and put himself at the top of the early Golden Boot standings. Golden Boot winners historically score between six and eight goals, and Balogun — with two already — has made a significant early statement. He will have further opportunities to add to his tally when USA face Australia and Turkey in the group stage.

Christian Pulisic, widely expected to lead the line for the United States, was withdrawn at half-time after picking up an injury. Pochettino addressed the concern after the match, saying:
