The United States Men's National Team have emerged from the 2026 FIFA World Cup group stage in strong form, and the bracket they now face suggests a genuine opportunity to reach the semi-finals on home soil.
Mauricio Pochettino's side opened their campaign with a dominant 4-1 victory over Paraguay at Los Angeles Stadium, before following up with a 2-0 win against Australia at Seattle Stadium. Six points from two matches confirmed their place in the Round of 32 as Group D winners.
A navigable road through the knockout rounds
The draw has handed the USMNT a path that avoids the tournament's traditional heavyweights in the early knockout stages. Their projected route to the semi-finals breaks down as follows.
In the Round of 32, the United States are set to face Bosnia and Herzegovina, who are expected to finish third in Group B.
A win there would set up a Round of 16 encounter against either New Zealand or Czechia — opponents the Americans will fancy their chances against.
The quarter-final is where the challenge sharpens considerably. Pochettino's men could come up against one of DR Congo, Ghana, Uruguay, or Austria — a round that would demand their best football regardless of the opponent drawn.
Expectations rising for Pochettino's side
While a potential clash with Uruguay or a tactically disciplined Austria side would represent a serious test, the United States have landed on what many consider the more favourable half of the bracket.
With the backing of home crowds and two convincing wins already banked, the USMNT are on course to at least match — and potentially surpass — the pre-tournament expectation of reaching the quarter-finals. A place in the last four is now a realistic ambition.
