Uzbekistan's Ilgiz Tantashev to Referee Algeria vs Austria at World Cup

2 hours ago·1 min

Uzbekistan referee Ilgiz Tantashev has been appointed to officiate tonight's crucial World Cup group-stage clash between Algeria and Austria, with kick-off scheduled for 10pm EST (3am UK time) at Kansas City Stadium.

Both sides remain in contention for a place in the last 32. A draw would send each team through on four points, while a winner from either side would leave the loser relying on their record as one of the best eight third-placed sides to advance.

Who is Ilgiz Tantashev?

Tantashev, 42, is among the most seasoned officials at this summer's tournament, having been active on the international scene since 2008. He will be assisted by compatriots Andrey Tsapenko and Timur Gaynullin on the lines.

The experienced Uzbek made headlines at the 2024 Olympics when his semifinal between Morocco and Spain was abandoned in the 11th minute after he collided with Spanish defender Marc Pubill and was unable to continue.

Katia Itzel Garcia will serve as the fourth official, with fellow Mexican Sandra Ramírez filling the reserve official role. VAR arrangements for the match are yet to be confirmed.

The simultaneous fixture between Jordan and Argentina takes place in Dallas at the same time.
