VAR Controversy Knocks Germany Out as Disallowed Tah Header Sparks Fury

1 hour ago·1 min

Germany's hopes at the FIFA World Cup were extinguished in heartbreaking fashion when a Jonathan Tah header that appeared to put them ahead in extra time was disallowed by VAR, ultimately sending them out of the tournament on a 4-3 penalty shootout defeat to Paraguay.

The decisive moment

With the scoreline locked at 1-1, Tah rose unmarked at the back post in the 12th minute of extra time and powered a header past Paraguay goalkeeper Orlando Gill. The celebrations were short-lived — referee Jalal Jayed was directed to the pitchside monitor and ruled that Germany's Waldemar Anton had impeded Gill in the build-up to the header.

The controversy centred on Gill falling to the ground before the header was struck — a moment that divided pundits sharply. Former England captain Alan Shearer was unsparing in his criticism of both the goalkeeper and the decision on BBC One.
