Villa's Home Fortress Crumbles Under Stadium Rebuild Pressure

1 hour ago·1 min

Unai Emery insists there are no excuses — yet the question persists: is the ongoing rebuild of Villa Park costing Aston Villa dearly on the pitch?

The North Stand is currently a shell, stripped back as the club pushes its stadium capacity beyond 50,000. With roughly 7,000 seats absent, Villa are playing home matches in front of approximately 37,000 supporters — a shadow of the atmosphere that once made Villa Park a fortress.

Saturday's 2-2 draw with Brentford extended an alarming run: Villa are yet to win at home this season in the Premier League. Champions Arsenal and Nottingham Forest have already helped themselves to three points at Villa Park, with Brentford becoming the latest side to leave unbeaten.

From invincible to insecure

Not long ago, Villa Park was among the most intimidating venues in English football. Between November 2022 and January 2026, Emery's side lost just eight of 61 home Premier League fixtures, winning 44 of them — a run that included 15 consecutive victories between March 2023 and December 2023.

Villa also spent 12 months unbeaten at home in the top flight between August 2024 and August 2025. That imperious record now feels like a distant memory. Since the turn of the year, defeats to Everton, Brentford, Chelsea, and Tottenham Hotspur have threatened their top-four ambitions, and fragility at home has carried into the current campaign.

Defender Matty Cash acknowledged the changed environment without hiding behind it.
