Vinicius Junior's contract situation at Real Madrid has moved to the centre of the summer transfer conversation, with Arsenal emerging as a genuine — if still conditional — suitor, while Real Madrid simultaneously chase Ivory Coast winger Yan Diomande from RB Leipzig.

Arsenal's interest: real but far from certain

The 26-year-old Brazil star enters the final year of his deal at the Bernabéu without a renewal agreed. Protracted negotiations have stalled, and the resulting uncertainty opened a door for Arsenal, newly-crowned Premier League champions, to explore a potential approach.

Yet the interest remains at an early stage. There have been no club-to-club talks, and there is no guarantee that a formal bid will follow. Arsenal have already signed Christos Tzolis this window — a replacement for Leandro Trossard — while doubts persist over Gabriel Martinelli's future. In previous windows the club pursued Real Madrid's Rodrygo and, this summer, Julian Alvarez and Morgan Rogers, who has since moved from Aston Villa to Chelsea.

The financial hurdle is considerable. Vinicius is believed to earn approximately €15–17 million net per year — the equivalent of around £247,000 to £279,000 per week after tax. To match that figure in the United Kingdom, Arsenal would need to offer him somewhere between £450,000 and £500,000 per week. That would place him comfortably above Bukayo Saka, widely considered the club's current highest earner on more than £300,000 per week. A report in The Telegraph suggested Arsenal might stretch to £400,000 — still short of Vinicius' current salary.

The scale of the financial task is best illustrated by the offer he declined in 2024: the Saudi Pro League were prepared to pay him €1 billion over five years plus a transfer fee to Real Madrid of more than £300 million — what would have been the most expensive move in football history. With one year remaining on his deal, any potential transfer fee now would be significantly lower, but the wages structure remains formidable.

Does the Diomande pursuit change anything?

Real Madrid's move for Diomande, 19, has attracted attention as a possible signal about Vinicius' standing at the club. Sky Sports News was told, however, that the two matters are unrelated. Real see Diomande as an addition to their attacking depth, not a replacement. The Ivory Coast international can operate from the right wing, and his arrival would most directly affect striker Goncalo Garcia — wanted by Fulham — and winger Brahim Diaz. Rodrygo remains sidelined with a long-term injury, giving Diomande space in the squad regardless of the Vinicius outcome.

The most likely outcome

All available indicators still point toward a renewal at Real Madrid. Club president Florentino Perez is personally involved in discussions, has publicly stated he wants Vinicius to stay, and new manager Jose Mourinho shares that position. Further talks between Real and Vinicius' representatives were expected this week, with Arsenal keeping a close watch.

The central sticking point appears to be salary parity — specifically, how closely Vinicius' new terms can align with those of Kylian Mbappe and reflect his standing as one of the squad's senior Galácticos. Real would not want to enter the new season with his contract running into its final months and speculation building.

Arsenal's pursuit is unlikely to gather serious momentum unless renewal talks collapse entirely. This week, in many respects, is the one that matters.
