Xabi Alonso Pushes Chelsea to Break Transfer Rules for Granit Xhaka

Chelsea are reportedly ready to tear up their own transfer rulebook in pursuit of Granit Xhaka, the 33-year-old Sunderland captain — a move that would mark a sharp departure from the policy that has defined the club's recruitment under BlueCo ownership.
Since Todd Boehly's consortium completed their takeover in 2022, Chelsea have built their squad almost entirely around young talent. The club signed just one player aged over 25 in that entire period: Tosin Adarabioyo, who joined on a free transfer from Fulham in the summer of 2024 at the age of 26. Every other recruit has been a youth-focused acquisition.
That pattern appeared set to continue this summer. Chelsea have already brought in three teenagers — Denner, Dastan Satpaev, and Geovany Quenda — and moved Emmanuel Emegha across from sister club Strasbourg. The direction of travel seemed clear.
The Alonso factor
Yet new head coach Xabi Alonso appears to be rewriting that approach. According to reports, Chelsea have opened preliminary discussions with Xhaka's representatives over a potential transfer from Sunderland.
The link between manager and player is well established. Alonso coached Xhaka at Bayer Leverkusen, where the pair were central figures in the club's historic 2023/24 season — an unbeaten domestic campaign in which Leverkusen claimed both the Bundesliga title and the DFB-Pokal. Alonso now appears keen on a reunion at Stamford Bridge.
Xhaka himself delivered one of the most eye-catching individual performances of the 2024/25 season. After his surprise move from Leverkusen to newly-promoted Sunderland, the former Arsenal midfielder was a driving force as the Black Cats finished seventh in the Premier League and secured a place in next season's UEFA Europa League.
Sunderland dig in
The path to a deal will not be straightforward. The BBC report that Sunderland have no intention of selling their captain, with the club making clear Xhaka is not available at any price. He still has two years remaining on his contract at the Stadium of Light, giving Sunderland little financial pressure to negotiate.
Whether Alonso's influence over Chelsea's transfer strategy is strong enough to unlock a deal for a player that cost the club its own long-held principles — and who his current employers have no wish to sell — remains to be seen.
