Algeria have named Luca Zidane — son of France icon Zinedine Zidane — in their squad for the FIFA World Cup 2026, marking his first World Cup call-up at the age of 28.
Veteran forward Riyad Mahrez, 35, has also been included. The former Manchester City and Leicester City star now plies his trade with Saudi Arabian club Al-Ahli and will be heading to his latest World Cup campaign.
Zidane's path to the Desert Foxes
Luca Zidane was Algeria's first-choice goalkeeper at the Africa Cup of Nations, but he suffered a broken jaw and chin in April while representing Spanish club Granada. He had previously played for France at youth level, up to under-20, before committing his international future to Algeria — the country where his grandparents were born.
His father, Zinedine Zidane, is one of football's most celebrated figures, having scored twice in France's 1998 World Cup final victory over Brazil. He also found the net in the 2006 final — though that appearance ended in infamy with a red card against Italy.
Bentaleb recalled after seven months
Coach Vladimir Petkovic has recalled midfielder Nabil Bentaleb to the squad after a seven-month absence. The former Tottenham Hotspur man, 31, has been based at Lille for the past three seasons and last appeared at a World Cup in Brazil in 2014 — Algeria's most recent finals appearance before this tournament.
