Zion Suzuki Is Looking Like an Upgrade on Emiliano Martinez at Aston Villa

1 hour ago·1 min

When Aston Villa supporters first began chanting about having the world's best goalkeeper, they were singing about Emiliano Martinez. Now they direct that same chant at Zion Suzuki — and they mean every word.

The 24-year-old Japanese international joined from Parma in the summer, stepping into one of the most scrutinised goalkeeping roles in English football. Far from buckling under that pressure, Suzuki has flourished, prompting genuine debate about whether Villa may have actually improved their position between the posts.

A statement performance against Manchester City

Suzuki's most eye-catching display came in Villa's victory over Manchester City — a result that ended City's 100-per-cent Premier League record under Enzo Maresca. Suzuki produced a series of commanding saves, commanded his area with authority, and looked composed on the ball throughout.

The contrast with Gianluigi Donnarumma at the other end was telling. While the UEFA Champions League winner allowed Nicolas Jackson's decisive strike to slip through him, Suzuki was imposing and assured. He was the standout goalkeeper on the pitch.

It emerged that Paris Saint-Germain had earmarked Suzuki as a long-term successor to Donnarumma following the Italian's departure. Plans to send Suzuki out on loan, however, ultimately pushed him toward Villa's project instead.
