The route to the TotalEnergies CAF Under-23 Africa Cup of Nations Egypt 2027 is now clear after the qualifying draw was held at CAF headquarters in Cairo on Tuesday. A total of 42 nations will contest seven available berths, with hosts Egypt already assured of their place at the eight-team final tournament.

Three rounds stand between the hopefuls and glory

The qualification process unfolds across three knockout rounds of home-and-away ties, running from September 2026 through to March 2027. The draw was conducted with the assistance of former Côte d'Ivoire international Abdoulaye Meite and former Egypt goalkeeper Nader El-Sayed.

The First Round pairs 28 teams in 14 two-legged contests, with the first legs set for 20 September 2026 and the return fixtures on 06 October 2026. Among the standout early ties, Tunisia travel to face Benin in a North versus West Africa clash, while Kenya and Tanzania renew their East African rivalry. Sierra Leone meet Burkina Faso, Mauritania take on DR Congo, and São Tomé and Príncipe face Equatorial Guinea.

Continental heavyweights enter in the second round

The 14 First Round winners will be joined in the Second Round by 14 teams that received byes, awarded on the basis of their performances across the previous three editions of the competition. This is where Africa's major footballing nations step in.

Nigeria await the winners of the Mauritania versus DR Congo tie, while Ghana enter against the winners of the Togo and Libya fixture. Côte d'Ivoire will face whoever emerges from the Kenya–Tanzania derby, and Zambia take on the Sierra Leone–Burkina Faso winners.

Morocco face either Ethiopia or Uganda, Cameroon meet the winners of Rwanda and Sudan, and South Africa will confront either Comoros or Madagascar. Also entering at this stage are Niger, Gabon, Senegal, Congo, Guinea, Algeria, and Mali.

Second Round first legs are scheduled for 09 November 2026, with the return matches on 17 November 2026.

The decisive third round

The 14 Second Round survivors will then contest seven two-legged Third Round ties to settle the final seven qualifying places. First legs fall on 22 March 2027, with the decisive return fixtures on 30 March 2027. The seven aggregate winners will take their seats alongside Egypt at the continental finals.

A gateway to the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics

The tournament carries weight far beyond the continental stage. TotalEnergies CAF U-23 AFCON Egypt 2027 forms a key part of Africa's pathway to the Men's Olympic Football Tournament at the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games.

Africa's Olympic football heritage is rich. Nigeria made history at Atlanta 1996, becoming the continent's first men's football gold medallists, before Cameroon claimed gold at Sydney 2000. Nigeria have since added silver at Beijing 2008 and bronze at Rio 2016, making them Africa's most decorated nation in the men's Olympic football tournament. Ghana, meanwhile, were the first African nation to win an Olympic football medal of any colour, taking bronze at Barcelona 1992.
