Agüero Urges Atlético Madrid to Sell Álvarez for the Good of All

2 hours ago·2 min

Sergio Agüero, the former Argentina striker, has called on Atlético Madrid to part ways with Julián Álvarez, arguing that retaining an unhappy player damages the club's dressing room harmony and serves no one's interests.

Álvarez made headlines after publicly admitting his desire to leave Atlético Madrid. Agüero, speaking to Jijantes FC, said the situation has a clear resolution — a transfer — and that the club should act on it.

"When a player isn't happy, each club takes their own stance and the player ends up losing out. If he's not comfortable, the best thing is to find a solution and sell him. You're not going to have a player in a bad mood all year round."

Álvarez himself was equally candid about his position: "I can't hide either. I try to be an honest person. I spoke with the people at the club I needed to speak with. The best thing for everyone is a transfer, and I want to fulfil my dream."

Barcelona touted as the ideal destination

Agüero pointed to Barcelona as a natural home for Álvarez, describing him as a spectacular fit for their style of play. The Argentine forward's ability to press, link up, and finish makes him well-suited to the kind of football Barcelona demand.

Agüero acknowledged, however, that the final word rests with Atlético Madrid. "With that clause, the decision lies with the club. The club will decide whether or not to sell you," he noted — adding that Álvarez himself appeared to accept as much in his public remarks.

Club digs in despite player's frustration

Atlético Madrid have been reluctant to let Álvarez leave cheaply, initially leaning on his substantial release clause to ward off potential buyers. Yet the situation has grown more complicated, with reports indicating that Álvarez feels deceived — he claims the club gave him assurances that a Barcelona offer in the €90M–€100M range would be enough to secure his departure.

With the player's discontent now out in the open, pressure continues to mount on Atlético Madrid to reach a resolution before the transfer window closes.
