Aguirre Plays Down Azteca Advantage as Mexico Brace for England Clash

2 hours ago·1 min

Mexico manager Javier Aguirre has brushed aside suggestions that altitude and home support at the iconic Estadio Azteca will give his side a significant edge when they face England in the FIFA World Cup Round of 16 on Sunday.

Despite the Azteca's legendary status as one of football's most intimidating venues—situated more than 2,200 metres above sea level in Mexico City—Aguirre refused to lean on the stadium's reputation as a source of comfort ahead of the knockout tie.

Rather than playing up any environmental or atmospheric advantages, the Mexico coach chose instead to focus attention on the threat posed by England, warning those around him not to underestimate their opponents.

England arrive at the Round of 16 as one of the tournament's more commanding sides, and Aguirre's measured caution reflects the scale of the challenge facing El Tri as they bid to advance deep into the competition on home soil.

The match is set to take place on Sunday, with Mexico hoping that a passionate Azteca crowd and the demands of the high altitude will still play some role—even if their manager is reluctant to count on it.
