Alonso Insists Chelsea Are Happy with Fernandez Despite Transfer Speculation

Chelsea head coach Xabi Alonso has moved to dispel growing doubts about Enzo Fernandez's future at Stamford Bridge, stating that the Argentina midfielder has returned in excellent shape and with a positive mindset ahead of Monday's Premier League opener against Fulham.
"Enzo is a Chelsea player. We are happy with him and he's getting ready for Monday," Alonso told reporters during his Thursday news conference. He went on to describe the 25-year-old as having "integrated really well" since rejoining the squad following the World Cup, adding that Fernandez is "training really well" and showing "a really good attitude."
A summer of uncertainty
The situation surrounding Fernandez has been turbulent throughout the close season. Chelsea reached an understanding with the player's agent, Javier Pastore, in late May that Fernandez could depart for £120 million — but they set 14 August as the deadline for any formal bids. That date came and went without an offer materialising, and the club subsequently informed Fernandez's camp that he is no longer available in this window.
Manchester City remain interested in signing him and reportedly believe Chelsea are still open to negotiating a deal. City have been active in midfield recruitment this summer after Rodri agreed a move to Barcelona and Bernardo Silva departed on the expiry of his contract. They are also in advanced discussions over a separate £85 million deal for Morocco midfielder Ayyoub Bouaddi.
Reports from Spain allege that Chelsea have quietly engaged agent Jorge Mendes — who also represents winger Pedro Neto — to help resolve the Fernandez situation, suggesting the club may not be entirely closed off to a sale despite their public stance.
A complicated relationship with supporters
Fernandez's standing with Chelsea fans has grown complicated over the past year. When he came off the bench in last Saturday's 3-1 friendly victory over Real Sociedad, he was met with a chorus of jeers from sections of the crowd, though others greeted him with applause. A similarly divided reaction accompanied every one of his touches throughout the match.
An attempt to move to Real Madrid earlier in the summer came to nothing — the Spanish club later denied any interest — adding another layer of intrigue to what remains one of the summer's most drawn-out transfer sagas.
Chelsea did make a pointed gesture by handing Fernandez the captain's armband when he came on to replace Reece James against Real Sociedad, signalling at least publicly that the club views him as a key figure. Whether that message carries through to the end of the transfer window on 1 September remains to be seen.
