Cancelo Signs Permanent Barcelona Deal After Al-Hilal Exit

1 hour ago·2 min

Joao Cancelo has returned to Barcelona on a permanent basis, signing a three-year contract after his arrangement with Al-Hilal was terminated by mutual consent.

The Portugal full-back had departed Manchester City for the Saudi Pro League club on a three-year deal in 2024, but he spent last season on loan at Camp Nou, where he contributed to Barcelona's La Liga title triumph. Following his exit from Al-Hilal this summer, Cancelo became a free agent before sealing his return to the Catalan club.

The 32-year-old was unambiguous about his feelings on the move. "It's my dream," he said. "I'm where I want to be and I am very happy. I like the club, I identify with it. I feel loved here and I promise to give everything for this club."

A well-travelled career

Cancelo's relationship with Spanish football stretches back to 2014, when he arrived at Valencia on loan from Benfica. He has since accumulated experience across Europe's top leagues, spending time at Inter Milan (on loan in 2017-18), before making permanent moves to Juventus in 2018 and Manchester City in 2019. He then rounded out the 2022-23 season on loan at Bayern Munich.

His 2023-24 campaign was spent on a season-long loan at Barcelona from City, making this his third stint at the Spanish giants — and his first as a permanent signing.

Barcelona's summer rebuild

Cancelo's arrival is part of a broader wave of activity at Barcelona under manager Hansi Flick. The club also completed the signing of midfielder Rodri from Manchester City this week, with the fee reported at around £65 million. Rodri, who previously played alongside Cancelo at City, adds further Premier League experience to the squad.

Wingers Anthony Gordon and Karim Adeyemi have also arrived at Camp Nou this summer, strengthening Flick's attacking options. However, forward Ferran Torres has moved to Paris St-Germain, while veteran striker Robert Lewandowski has crossed the Atlantic to join MLS side Chicago Fire.
