Alonso Vows to Build Chelsea Around Palmer's Special Talent

4 hours ago·2 min

Xabi Alonso has wasted no time in making clear where Cole Palmer fits into his vision for Chelsea, declaring at his first press conference as manager that he will construct the team around the 24-year-old's remarkable ability.

Alonso spoke with unmistakable enthusiasm about Palmer's qualities after taking charge at Stamford Bridge, describing the England international as a once-in-a-generation talent whose intelligence and decision-making set him apart.

"From the first day, you can see he's a special talent, a special player. It's not easy to have one of those. And you can notice his quality, how he's able to play, the right decision in the right spot," Alonso told BBC Sport on Monday.

Palmer endured a disrupted 2025-26 campaign, and Alonso is determined to restore the attacking midfielder to his best by providing a stable tactical framework that gives him freedom in the final third.

"I'm happy that he has come in a good mood, a good mindset to have a great season, and we are really looking forward to getting the best from him. If we are able to build a strong team with the proper stability to find the key players, for sure, Cole is going to be one of those key players in the attacking part," Alonso added.

Uncertainty hanging over Fernandez and Garnacho

While Palmer's place at Chelsea appears secure, the futures of Enzo Fernandez and Alejandro Garnacho are far less certain. Alonso confirmed he wants Fernandez to stay but declined to elaborate on their private discussions.

Garnacho, however, looks increasingly likely to depart. Alonso acknowledged that other clubs have registered interest in the Argentinian winger, though he stopped short of confirming any imminent departure.

"The situation is that we have spoken with the sporting directors and there is an interest for him from other clubs. So, let's see how this develops. But hopefully, it finishes in the best possible way for all parts," Alonso said of Garnacho.

Chelsea's summer transfer activity is expected to continue shaping the squad Alonso believes can match Palmer's ambitions for the season ahead.
