Tolu Arokodare brought a Wolverhampton Wanderers training session to an abrupt halt this week after sitting down on the pitch and refusing to move until the club agreed to sell him to Fiorentina.

BBC Sport has learned that the 25-year-old striker staged the protest on Monday, prompting new head coach Cesar Peixoto to terminate the session entirely. Arokodare will play no part in Wednesday's pre-season friendly against Maidenhead United as a result.

A transfer standoff

Wolves have rejected Fiorentina's bid for the Nigerian forward, having already accepted an offer from Turkish top-flight side Trabzonspor. Arokodare, however, has made clear that Fiorentina is his preferred destination — and his sit-down protest signals he is determined to push the move through.

The incident is not the first time Arokodare has courted controversy at Molineux. In April, he was disciplined by the club following a confrontation with young forward Mateus Mane.

A difficult start for Peixoto

The protest represents an early test for Peixoto, who is only weeks into his tenure after replacing Rob Edwards in a surprise decision last month. The 46-year-old, who earned one senior cap for Portugal during his playing career, arrived at Wolves from Gil Vicente and faces the significant task of returning the club to the Premier League at the first attempt following last season's relegation.

Arokodare joined Wolves from Genk last summer for £24 million but contributed only three league goals as the club finished bottom of the Premier League and dropped into the Championship.

With pre-season well underway, Peixoto will be hoping to resolve the situation quickly before it disrupts the squad's preparations for the new campaign.
