Arsenal's summer transfer window has delivered one major success and one significant disappointment. The club secured the signing of Bruno Guimaraes — Newcastle United's captain and a fellow Brazilian to Vinicius Jr — for £75 million, while their pursuit of the Real Madrid winger ended when Vinicius Jr agreed a new six-year deal to stay in Madrid.

Guimaraes joins last summer's arrivals Martin Zubimendi and Viktor Gyokeres as another statement signing aimed at winning titles immediately. Manager Mikel Arteta made clear that any further business must raise the quality of his squad: "That's what we're trying to do. If we have the right player in the market to make us much better."

The situation is made more urgent by injuries to defenders Jurrien Timber and William Saliba, who will miss the start of the season, leaving Arsenal short at the back as they attempt to defend their title.

Winger options on the table

The search for an elite wide player to replace Vinicius Jr as a target has proven difficult. Sporting director Andrea Berta has been active in identifying candidates, though many carry complications.

Arsenal have already moved in the wide forward market, bringing in Christos Tzolis from Club Brugge as cover for the outgoing Leandro Trossard. The 24-year-old Greek international produced 22 goals and 29 assists in all competitions for the Belgian club last season, and has impressed during pre-season.

Bradley Barcola of Paris St-Germain has been explored as an option, but Liverpool are also keen and the French club are demanding more than £100 million. Morgan Rogers was another target before he completed a £117 million move from Aston Villa to Chelsea — Arsenal were not prepared to exceed £80 million for the England international.

Kenan Yildiz of Juventus has emerged as a serious option. The 21-year-old Turkey international scored 11 goals and registered 10 assists in 47 appearances across all competitions during the 2025-26 season. According to Opta, only Manchester United's Bruno Fernandes (98) and Werder Bremen's Romano Schmid (77) created more open-play chances in Europe's top five leagues last season, and only Vinicius Jr (43) created more chances after carrying the ball than Yildiz (37). His ability to operate across the frontline adds further appeal for Arteta. However, Yildiz has just signed a new four-year deal and Juventus have indicated they do not wish to sell.

Atletico Bilbao's Nico Williams is another name on Arsenal's radar. The Spain international completed 43.8 percent of his 153 dribbles last season, contributing six goals and three assists despite injury disruption. Opta data shows he averaged 8.2 dribbles per 90 minutes in La Liga — more than any player in Europe's top five leagues except Lamine Yamal, Kevin, and Jeremy Doku. He holds a contract until 2035, though reports suggest a release clause may exist. Arteta's preference for availability and consistency could count against Williams given his injury-hit campaign.

Arsenal also retain internal options on the flank in Eberechi Eze and Noni Madueke, with Eze having played from the left in several of Arsenal's biggest matches at the end of last season.

Defensive reinforcements sought

With Timber and Saliba sidelined, Arsenal need a defender capable of stepping straight into the first team. Aston Villa's Ezri Konsa — valued at around £60 million — has attracted their interest. The England international is capable of playing both centre-back and right-back, and has become a regular starter for the national team.

Arsenal have also registered interest in Cristian Romero, captain of rivals Tottenham Hotspur. A deal of that nature would be a remarkable transfer — echoing last season's signing of Eze — but Atletico Madrid are also reportedly interested, and Spurs are expected to resist selling to a direct competitor.

Could a striker also arrive?

Gyokeres scored 21 goals in all competitions last season after arriving as the club's marquee summer signing, though questions about his suitability to Arsenal's system have persisted. That has kept Arsenal's interest alive in Atletico Madrid's Julian Alvarez, who has made clear his desire to leave the LaLiga club. The Argentina international — a former Manchester City player — would represent a significant upgrade in quality. Barcelona are also pursuing Alvarez, which could complicate Arsenal's prospects.

Squad movement and the bigger picture

Arsenal are also managing outgoings. Gabriel Jesus, Gabriel Martinelli, and Reiss Nelson are all available if suitable offers materialise. Denmark midfielder Christian Norgaard has departed for Everton, and no clear route forward has emerged for academy product Ethan Nwaneri.

Alongside Guimaraes and Tzolis, Arsenal have added former Leeds goalkeeper Illan Meslier as back-up between the posts. The window remains open and, with defensive injuries and attacking ambitions both pressing, the coming weeks in north London are set to be eventful.
