Mikel Arteta has declared that the arrival of Bruno Guimaraes will propel Arsenal to the "next level," adding that the club intends to remain active in the transfer market this summer.

Arsenal confirmed the signing of Guimaraes from Newcastle United on Saturday for a fee of £75 million. The 28-year-old Brazilian midfielder was presented to supporters at Emirates Stadium ahead of the pre-season clash against Borussia Dortmund, though he was not named in the matchday squad for the 3-2 defeat.

Arteta expects Guimaraes to be available for Wednesday's fixture against Como, and the Arsenal manager was eager to spell out precisely why he pursued the signing.

"I'm delighted to have him. We see very clearly — especially the energy that he brought immediately to the training ground — the hunger, the desire to come here and create a big history at the club," Arteta said. "We want to go to the next level and are very, very much convinced that we're going to need players with such a personality, desire and character to push everybody inside the organisation to go even higher."

Midfield options multiply

Guimaraes joins a midfield already stocked with options. Declan Rice, Martin Odegaard, Martin Zubimendi, Myles Lewis-Skelly, Ethan Nwaneri, Eberechi Eze, and Mikel Merino are all available to Arteta as Arsenal defend their Premier League title.

Arteta outlined the specific qualities Guimaraes brings to his squad: versatility across two midfield positions, sharp instincts to win the ball and move play forward at pace, comfort in combining between the lines, and a genuine goal threat from his runs into the box.

"He's a player that is very comfortable putting people through, moving between the lines, moving in behind. And then he's a goal threat. He's got a smell and a really good timing to get in the box. And he has the capacity to finish the actions," Arteta added.

More business possible

Guimaraes is Arsenal's third signing of the window. The Gunners had earlier completed the addition of winger Christos Tzolis from Club Brugge and brought in goalkeeper Illan Meslier on a free transfer. A pursuit of Real Madrid's Vinicius Jr ended when the Brazilian winger signed a new six-year contract to remain in Spain, but Arteta made clear the club has no intention of stopping there.

"If we have the right player in the market to make us much better, we are very much looking forward to that," the Arsenal manager said.

Injury concerns remain

Arteta also confirmed that defender Jurrien Timber remains "weeks away" from a return to fitness, while William Saliba continues his recovery from a back injury that is expected to keep him out for an extended period.
