Asian, African, and Caribbean FAs Blast UEFA Chief Over World Cup Expansion Criticism

Soccer governing bodies across Asia, Africa, and the Caribbean have united to rebuke UEFA President Aleksander Čeferin after he allegedly described matches in the expanded 48-team FIFA World Cup as uninteresting.

The associations, whose member nations stand to benefit most from the enlarged tournament format, voiced strong objections on Sunday to comments attributed to Čeferin, arguing that the expansion represents a historic step forward for global football.

The 48-team World Cup, set to be hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico in 2026, was approved by FIFA to give more nations — particularly those from confederations outside Europe and South America — a genuine shot at the world's biggest stage.

Critics of the expanded format, including Čeferin, have suggested that widening the field dilutes the quality of competition. But football associations in regions that have historically received fewer slots at the tournament pushed back firmly against that narrative.

For African football bodies, the expansion is especially significant. The continent will see its allocation of World Cup berths increase, offering more of Africa's footballing nations the opportunity to compete at the highest level — a development widely celebrated across the continent.

By publicly challenging the UEFA president's remarks, the confederations from Asia, Africa, and the Caribbean signalled that the global game is no longer shaped by European preferences alone, and that the voices of smaller footballing nations carry real weight in shaping FIFA's direction.
