Aston Villa Snap Up Joao Gomes From Wolves in £38m Deal

17 hours ago·1 min

Aston Villa have completed the signing of midfielder Joao Gomes from Wolverhampton Wanderers in a deal worth up to £38m, with £34m paid upfront and a further £4m in potential add-ons.

The 25-year-old becomes Villa's second major acquisition of the summer, arriving just three days after the club sealed a £59.5m deal for fellow midfielder Johan Manzambi — a transfer that set a new club record at the time.

Midfield overhaul under way

Unai Emery's squad is undergoing a significant midfield rebuild. Youri Tielemans departed for Manchester United earlier in the transfer window, while Amadou Onana faces a lengthy spell on the sidelines through injury.

The addition of Gomes addresses those absences directly, giving Emery greater depth and competition in the engine room as Villa look to build on their recent European ambitions.

Further upheaval may follow. Attacker Morgan Rogers is set to leave Villa Park this summer in a deal that would see him join Chelsea for a club-record £117m — a move that would dwarf even the Manzambi transfer fee.
