The transfer saga surrounding Atletico Madrid forward Julian Alvarez intensified on Wednesday, as the Spanish club delivered a blunt response to Barcelona's public appeal — and Arsenal continued to monitor the situation from afar.

Atletico shut the door on Barcelona

Barcelona president Joan Laporta made a direct, on-the-record plea on Wednesday, urging Atletico Madrid to accept his club's offer for Alvarez. Speaking through Barcelona's own channels, Laporta said: "The truth is that we're very interested in the player. We'd like our offer to be accepted, and we say this with all due respect for Atletico Madrid."

Atletico did not hold a press conference in response — but the club's position was made crystal clear via quotes given to Spanish sports newspaper Marca. "The player is being portrayed as the victim, but we are the only victims in this case," the club said. "[Barcelona] have harmed us both financially and socially. There is a zero-per-cent chance of selling him to Barcelona — it's not about money, it's about dignity."

The fierce rivalry between the two clubs, compounded by grievances over previous transfer dealings, has hardened Atletico's stance beyond any financial negotiation.

Alvarez absent from training

The 26-year-old Argentine did not train with his team-mates on Wednesday. Atletico attributed his absence to a stomach bug and a poor night's sleep, with the club insisting there was no connection to the ongoing transfer speculation.

Atletico expert and journalist Ruben Uría told Sky Sports News the atmosphere had grown "extremely tense." He confirmed that neither CEO Miguel Gil Marín nor the club's Apollo board had any intention of sanctioning a sale. "The entire Apollo board supports Gil Marín's decision. Alvarez has been told," Uría said.

Arsenal wait in the wings

Arsenal sporting director Andrea Berta has maintained contact with his former employers at Atletico in recent days, and the Gunners remain a genuine interested party. According to Uría, Arsenal would be prepared to smash their transfer record — the £105 million paid for Declan Rice three summers ago — to bring Alvarez to the Emirates Stadium.

However, the player himself has made clear he does not want to move to London. Alvarez's public desire to leave Atletico has already cost him dearly with supporters: he was booed off the pitch during the club's 2-2 draw with Villarreal in their opening LaLiga fixture on Sunday.

Sky Sports News senior reporter Rob Dorsett acknowledged Arsenal's position remains an outside chance for now. "If Alvarez thinks his future needs to be away from Atletico Madrid after upsetting his supporters, and they won't sell him to Barcelona, his only option is to join Arsenal, the Premier League champions," Dorsett said. "At the moment, he says he doesn't want to do that. But there are still six days of the window left."
