Mourinho's record against Atletico

Mourinho has a remarkable history in the capital derby. During his first stint at Real Madrid, he won all six La Liga derbies across three seasons, including three victories at the old Vicente Calderon — the last two of which came against Diego Simeone's Atletico side in 2012 and 2013.

Simeone did have the last word in that chapter, however. His Atletico beat Real Madrid in the Copa del Rey final, played on Los Blancos' own turf — Mourinho's final match in charge that spell.

Where both clubs stand

The two sides arrive at the Metropolitano in similar form: each has recorded two wins and one defeat in La Liga so far this season. Real Madrid also opened their UEFA Champions League campaign with a victory, defeating Inter Milan at the Bernabeu. Atletico, meanwhile, suffered a defeat against Liverpool on the following matchday.

These clubs clashed three times last season. Atletico won the first meeting emphatically — a 5-2 La Liga victory at the Metropolitano — but Real Madrid responded by beating them in the Supercopa semi-final and again in the return league fixture at the Bernabeu.
