Awoniyi and Onyeka Feature as Arsenal Demolish Coventry 3-0 in Title Defence Opener

Arsenal launched their Premier League title defence in emphatic fashion, sweeping aside newly promoted Coventry City 3-0 at the Emirates Stadium on Friday evening — a result that sent an immediate message to their rivals.

Nigeria internationals Frank Onyeka and Taiwo Awoniyi were both on the pitch for Coventry but were unable to stem the tide. Onyeka completed the full 90 minutes, while Awoniyi — who had only completed his move from Nottingham Forest days earlier — came off the bench with 20 minutes remaining.

Early goals settled the contest

Kai Havertz and Bukayo Saka put Arsenal firmly in control by the 23rd minute, making the outcome feel inevitable long before the half-time whistle. Captain Martin Ødegaard then drove the point home four minutes after the break, capping a commanding performance from Mikel Arteta's side.

The victory was the 150th of Arteta's Premier League reign, achieved in just 249 games. Only Pep Guardiola, José Mourinho, Jürgen Klopp, and Sir Alex Ferguson reached that landmark in fewer matches.

History in Arsenal's sights

Having ended a 22-year wait for the English league title last season, Arsenal are now chasing something even rarer — consecutive top-flight championships. Back-to-back titles would be a feat the club has not achieved since they claimed three in succession between 1932 and 1935.

Arteta confirmed the signing of England defender Ezri Konsa from Aston Villa on the same day as the match. Greek winger Christos Tzolis was the sole new face in the starting lineup, while record summer signing Bruno Guimarães missed out after picking up a knock during last week's Community Shield victory over Manchester City.
