Balogun Lights Up World Cup 2026 With Brace as USA Cruise Past Paraguay

5 days ago·3 min

Folarin Balogun announced himself on the grandest stage possible, scoring twice as USA swept past Paraguay 4-1 in their FIFA World Cup 2026 opener in Los Angeles — a result that sent the co-hosts' supporters into a frenzy and signalled the arrival of a genuine tournament striker.

The 24-year-old's journey to that spotlight is one of sport's more compelling stories: born in New York by chance, raised in London, schooled in France, and now the focal point of Mauricio Pochettino's attack at the biggest sporting event on the planet.

A New York birth that changed everything

Balogun's path to wearing the Stars and Stripes began before he could walk. His Nigerian parents, based in London, flew to the United States while his mother was heavily pregnant. Unable to return to England before his birth, they welcomed their son in New York — an accident of geography that granted him American eligibility and, as it turned out, an extraordinary opportunity.

Arsenal academy to Reims breakthrough

Back in England, Balogun developed at the Arsenal academy alongside the likes of Bukayo Saka, Emile Smith Rowe, and Eddie Nketiah at Hale End. Despite the evident talent in that group, first-team minutes up front proved scarce for Balogun, and it was a loan spell at Reims in Ligue 1 that unlocked his senior career. He scored 21 goals in 37 appearances — a return that caught the attention of Monaco, who moved decisively in the summer of 2023 and paid Arsenal £35 million to secure him permanently.

The switch that shaped his future

That same summer brought a decision with even greater consequences. Balogun had represented England up to U21 level but had also appeared in the United States youth set-up. With the U21 European Championship approaching, he flew to Orlando, met with US Soccer officials, and committed to the Stars and Stripes. With the FIFA World Cup 2026 three years away and set to be played on home soil, the timing was striking — he would hit his peak years just as the tournament arrived.

He marked the commitment by scoring his first senior goal for USA in the CONCACAF Nations League final victory over Canada in 2023, establishing himself as the natural choice to lead the line at this summer's showpiece.

Red-hot form at Monaco sets the tone

After a 2024/25 season interrupted by injury, Balogun rediscovered his sharpness in February, scoring twice for Monaco against Paris Saint-Germain in the UEFA Champions League before adding a goal and an assist against the European champions in Ligue 1 shortly after. He then scored in eight consecutive league matches, contributing 11 goals in his final 14 appearances of the campaign. A winner against Senegal in a pre-tournament fixture two weeks before the World Cup underlined his readiness.

Against Paraguay, it all clicked. Two goals, finished with composure off both feet, confirmed Balogun as the tournament's first breakout star. There is a certain irony in the fact that a striker who could not force his way into Arsenal's first team has become indispensable to former Tottenham Hotspur manager Pochettino. But for USA, the picture is far simpler — alongside Christian Pulisic, they now have a striker capable of carrying their World Cup dream all the way.
