Manchester United's long-running pursuit of Frenkie de Jong could be about to bear fruit, with Barcelona reportedly prepared to sell the Dutch midfielder in order to fund defensive reinforcements in January.

The Catalan club find themselves under significant financial pressure. Having spent €174 million on incoming transfers during the summer while recouping just €104 million, Barcelona sporting director Deco is understood to need a major sale before he can address weaknesses at the back. De Jong, whose current contract runs until 2029, represents one of the most sellable assets at the club.

A financial squeeze in Catalonia

La Liga has set Barcelona's squad cost limit at €582 million for the 2026/27 season — a notable rise from the €432 million ceiling imposed after last winter's transfer window, but one that still demands careful financial management. The club's position is clear: sell to buy.

Deco is aiming to bring in a defender capable of maintaining the level of a Barcelona side that has made a perfect start to the current campaign, winning all seven of their opening league fixtures. Without a significant sale, that ambition is constrained.

De Jong's injury and United's persistent interest

De Jong has yet to feature this season after sustaining a knee ligament injury during the Netherlands' World Cup campaign. He is approaching a return and will be assessed by Barcelona's medical staff following the international break.

The 29-year-old started all six of the Netherlands' matches at the World Cup before being substituted in extra time of the penalty shootout defeat to Morocco. He has now earned 70 caps for his country but will miss the early rounds of the Nations League this month and next.

United's interest in De Jong stretches back to his days at Ajax, the club he left for Barcelona in 2019. The Red Devils were understood to be monitoring him closely in 2024, when his contract was approaching its end. Although he has since extended his deal to 2029, the financial realities at Camp Nou may yet force Barcelona's hand.

De Jong has made close to 300 appearances for Barcelona, claiming three La Liga titles along the way and becoming a senior figure in the Netherlands setup. He played 38 club matches across all competitions in 2025/26 — but will need to rebuild his position in Hansi Flick's squad after his injury absence.

For United, a player of De Jong's profile would represent a transformative addition. Whether the clubs can agree terms remains to be seen, but the green light from Barcelona's end marks a clear shift in a transfer saga that has dragged on for years.
