Harvey Barnes came off the bench to score twice as Newcastle United edged past West Bromwich Albion 3-2 in the Carabao Cup second round at St James' Park on Wednesday, 26 August 2026.

Isaac Price stole the show early on his West Brom debut, curling a free-kick from 25 yards around the wall and into the bottom corner to leave goalkeeper Ewen Jaouen stranded in the 19th minute.

Newcastle drew level shortly before the break through another debutant. Bazoumana Touré poked home from close range — though there was initial doubt over whether the final touch came from Touré or West Brom defender Chris Mepham — to make it 1-1 in the 38th minute.

Barnes turns the game on its head

Manager Barnes arrived at the start of the second half in place of Touré and made an immediate impact. After his first effort from the edge of the box was blocked, the winger followed up to fire into the net and put Newcastle ahead in the 48th minute.

The lead proved short-lived. Lewis Hall conceded a penalty for handball — repeating the same mistake he had made against Liverpool in the Premier League just days earlier — and Price stepped up to convert and restore parity at 2-2 in the 77th minute.

Newcastle were not to be denied, however. Anthony Elanga drove forward down the right and fed a low cross to Amar Dedic, whose delivery into the box allowed Barnes to sweep home a first-time finish in the 81st minute.

The victory sends Newcastle into the Carabao Cup third round, where they will defend the trophy they lifted in 2025.
