Bellingham Brace and Kane Penalty Sends England Past Mexico in Azteca Epic

1 hour ago·2 min

England are into the FIFA World Cup quarter-finals after a breathtaking 3-2 victory over co-hosts Mexico at the Azteca Stadium on Monday, setting up a last-eight clash against Norway on Saturday.

Thomas Tuchel's side produced one of the most remarkable knockout performances in their history — overcoming a hostile atmosphere, a one-hour kick-off delay, and a second-half red card to Mexico's significant home support to book their place in the last eight.

Bellingham strikes twice in 98 seconds

Mexico had been the tournament's stingiest defence, yet Jude Bellingham shattered that record in stunning fashion during the first half. In the 36th minute, Declan Rice drove England forward on the counter and Bukayo Saka delivered a cross that Bellingham headed in for the opener.

Then, barely 98 seconds later, England struck again from kick-off. Harry Kane squared the ball and Bellingham bundled it over the line to double the advantage, silencing a crowd of 80,824 inside the intimidating Azteca.

Mexico refused to capitulate. Julian Quinones smashed in from a soft free-kick in the 43rd minute to drag the hosts back into contention, and Jordan Pickford was forced into an outstanding save — flying to his right to tip over a Raul Jimenez header — as Mexico pressed late in the first half.

Quansah's red card changes the game

England came out of the break with purpose, and Nico O'Reilly rattled the right post with a shot from outside the box within five minutes of the restart. But the tie turned dramatically in the 54th minute when Jarell Quansah, operating at right-back, made a reckless sliding challenge and referee Alireza Faghani produced a straight red card following a VAR review.

Faghani was far from finished shaping the contest. Minutes after Quansah's dismissal, Anthony Gordon was brought down inside the box by the Mexico goalkeeper, and Kane stepped up to bury the penalty and net his sixth goal of the tournament — a composed finish under enormous pressure.

Mexico were handed a lifeline of their own in the 69th minute when VAR sent Faghani to the monitor after Kane was penalised for a foul on Brian Gutierrez. Jimenez converted from the spot to set up a grandstand finale with more than 20 minutes remaining.

England dig deep to hold on

Tuchel responded by switching to a back five, introducing Dan Burn and Djed Spence to shore up a depleted defence. England's remaining players threw themselves in front of shots, cleared crosses from seemingly endless waves of Mexican pressure, and refused to yield as the Azteca roared.

When the final whistle sounded, the relief on England's faces told the full story. Tuchel's side had earned a quarter-final berth the hard way — and Norway awaits on Saturday.
