Bellingham Double Puts England Ahead in Breathtaking Mexico Clash

53 minutes ago·2 min

A weather delay, a ferocious atmosphere at Estadio Azteca, and three first-half goals — England's FIFA World Cup round of 16 showdown with Mexico delivered everything football fans had hoped for, leaving BBC studio pundits struggling to contain their excitement at half-time.

Bellingham runs the show

Kick-off was pushed back by a full hour after storms over Mexico City triggered Estadio Azteca's lightning protocol, which prevents play from resuming until at least 30 minutes have passed since the last lightning strike within an eight-mile radius. The delay only amplified an already extraordinary atmosphere, with both sets of supporters treating the wait as a carnival.

Mexico's predominantly home crowd greeted every touch by their side with a thunderous olé, while England's players were serenaded by sustained boos and jeers from the moment the match began.

Mexico had the better of the early play. Declan Rice was booked inside the first minute for a high boot, and Raul Jimenez tested Jordan Pickford with a low shot on 15 minutes that the goalkeeper turned aside.

England struck on the counter in the 36th minute. Pickford launched a quick outlet, Rice found Bukayo Saka out wide on the right, and Saka's delivery met Jude Bellingham's diving header to put England ahead.

Bellingham was not finished. Still with Mexico reeling, he slid home Harry Kane's low cutback after Elliot Anderson had won possession 25 yards from goal — 2-0 to England before the hosts could draw breath.

Mexico hit back

Mexico responded within four minutes. Julian Quinones met a loose ball from a whipped free kick that Ezri Konsa could only deflect across the six-yard box, and Quinones hammered it home on the volley to make it 2-1.

The hosts pushed hard to level before the break. Jimenez dragged a good chance wide of the far post, then Pickford produced an acrobatic stop to tip a looping header over the bar. Bellingham made a vital intervention at the back post from the resulting corner to deny Cesar Montes an equaliser.

England went into half-time leading 2-1, but with Mexico firmly in the tie.

Hart and Richards in awe

BBC pundit Joe Hart was barely able to hide his delight at the spectacle.
