Bernardo Silva has declared that joining Real Madrid — and working under José Mourinho — was a decision he could never turn down, describing the iconic Portuguese coach as one of the defining figures in his country's footballing heritage.

The 31-year-old midfielder completed a two-year move to Real Madrid after his contract with Manchester City expired, reuniting him with a familiar cultural and linguistic environment close to Portugal.

A dream too big to refuse

Silva made clear that there was never any hesitation when the call came from the Spanish giants. "Having played against Real Madrid many times, you feel the importance of the club, and how great it is to be here," he told Real Madrid TV.

"When Real Madrid came calling, it was impossible not to say yes. I didn't think twice. Being close to my family, near Portugal, in a very similar culture, it helps. But the dream of playing for the best club in the history of football — because their trophies prove it — is a privilege."

Mourinho's influence on a generation

Silva was emphatic in his admiration for Mourinho, situating the coach within the broader story of Portuguese football. "Mourinho is a coach who means a lot to Portuguese football. Since I was little, I've watched his teams a lot, and he always puts Portugal's name at the highest level. I'm very happy to be able to learn from him," he said.

The former AS Monaco playmaker — backed for a prominent role by ex-Portugal boss Fernando Santos — also pointed to the FIFA World Cup 2026 as a major motivating factor behind his move.

A team player ready for anything

Silva outlined what he hopes to contribute at the Bernabéu, emphasising versatility and collective commitment above personal ambition. "I am a team player, a hard worker, someone who tries to make those around me better. I feel that I will bring a lot of effort and joy every day so that we can prepare for matches and be in the best possible shape," he said.

"I always try to be available in various positions to help the team. I am a player who can fit into many roles and will be ready for anything that Real Madrid needs."
