Boreham Wood forward Abdul Abdulmalik has become the unlikely centre of one of the summer's most intriguing transfer sagas, with Swedish top-flight club Djurgarden tabling a bid of £1 million for the 23-year-old.

Djurgarden have made two approaches to the National League club, and their latest offer — totalling £1m — would equal the record for the largest direct sale ever made by a National League side. That landmark fee was paid by Leicester City to Fleetwood Town for Jamie Vardy in 2012, a player who went on to win the Premier League title and earn senior England caps.

A winding road to the spotlight

Abdulmalik's emergence as a seven-figure transfer target has not followed a conventional path. He came through Millwall's academy, represented England at under-17 level, and played a key role in the club's Under-21 side as they claimed back-to-back Professional Development League South titles in 2022-23 and 2023-24.

Despite those achievements, a route into Millwall's first team never opened up, and he was released in 2024. Boreham Wood moved swiftly, snapping him up on a free transfer — and the decision has paid off handsomely.

In 2025-26, Abdulmalik delivered a breakout campaign: 17 goals and 10 assists as Boreham Wood advanced to the National League play-off final at Wembley, where he scored and provided an assist on the day.

Why Djurgarden came calling

The Swedish club's pursuit reflects a clear recruitment philosophy — identify undervalued talent early, develop them, and sell at a profit. Djurgarden recently appointed Max Hahn as sporting director, having previously served as head of recruitment at West Ham United, where he also worked under Sweden manager Graham Potter.

That connection to English football shapes how Djurgarden scan the market, targeting players with room to grow before their valuations spike. Danish striker August Priske illustrates the model: he joined Djurgarden from Midtjylland in 2024, struck 18 league goals in 2025, and earned a move to Birmingham City in January 2026.

Abdulmalik represents a different entry point — a player who rebuilt his career at non-league level rather than arriving from an established European academy. Should the transfer go through, it would match the record set by Vardy's move more than a decade ago and raise fresh questions about how much hidden talent the non-league pyramid still contains.
