Liverpool midfielder Dominik Szoboszlai has moved to quash speculation about a dressing-room fallout, insisting he has resolved the situation with team-mates Curtis Jones and Kostas Tsimikas following a widely shared video that appeared to show the three players arguing over the captain's armband.

The footage emerged after Liverpool's 1-0 pre-season victory over Wrexham at Yankee Stadium in New York. As the players walked across the pitch to acknowledge supporters at full time, Jones, Szoboszlai, and Tsimikas were seen in a heated exchange. During the match, Szoboszlai had handed the armband to Tsimikas rather than Jones upon being substituted — and in the post-match clip, the Greece left-back was filmed tossing it to the ground.

"It was never a debate between us three," said Szoboszlai, who captained the side throughout much of the United States tour with regular skipper Virgil van Dijk absent and Joe Gomez injured in the opening fixture. "We just discussed something on the pitch. After, you guys make it very big. But next time we will manage to do it in the changing room. Nobody was angry at no-one. It's all cleared — we are cool."

Szoboszlai's handling of the armband appeared to shift in Liverpool's 4-2 defeat by Leeds on Sunday, when he passed it to Jones rather than Tsimikas, suggesting any tension had been put to rest.

Vice-captaincy yet to be decided

With Andy Robertson's departure to Tottenham Hotspur leaving the vice-captaincy vacant, Szoboszlai confirmed that new manager Andoni Iraola has not yet opened discussions on who will fill the role.

"No, there hasn't been any conversation. Obviously we have Virgil as the captain. We have Ali [Alisson]. We have Joe Gomez. So there was no conversation at all," the 25-year-old said. "If you get offered the vice-captain at Liverpool, you're going to take it. It would be a proud moment for me. But I respect everybody, so either way, whoever it's going to be we're going to follow them."

Mac Allister definitely returning

Speaking to reporters in Chicago before the squad flew back to England, Szoboszlai also moved to correct a misunderstanding from an earlier press conference, where his phrasing — "if Alexis Mac Allister comes back" — had raised eyebrows.

"That's my English, guys. It's not 'if' — it's 'when' he comes back. So now I make it clear. He's coming back and he's going to be part of the team as much as I know," he said.

The midfielder reserved particular praise for 19-year-old Trey Nyoni, who has impressed during pre-season after managing only 229 minutes of action under former boss Arne Slot last campaign. "I always knew that he's a good player. In training, he showed his quality many times," Szoboszlai said. "The squad is short, so we need everybody."

Liverpool return to training from Wednesday and face Monaco in a pre-season friendly at Anfield on Sunday before kicking off their Premier League campaign at Newcastle United on 23 August.
