Nigeria's Flying Eagles face a pivotal semifinal against hosts Cote d'Ivoire on Wednesday evening at Stade Charles Konan Banny in Yamoussoukro, with a place in the WAFU B U-20 Championship final — and a berth at next year's Africa U-20 Cup of Nations — on the line.

Nigeria arrived at this stage as Group B runners-up after suffering a 2-0 defeat to Burkina Faso's Young Stallions in their final group match. Coach Abdu Maikaba is expected to make changes to his starting lineup as his side looks to recover their momentum.

Ivorian form demands respect

Cote d'Ivoire head into the tie in formidable shape, having won every group game and scored seven goals while keeping a clean sheet throughout. The Young Elephants have conceded nothing and will carry the confidence of a perfect record into Wednesday's contest.

History, however, offers Nigeria encouragement. The two sides last met in a decisive group stage encounter at the 2024 edition of the tournament, held in Togo. The Flying Eagles came from behind to beat Cote d'Ivoire 2-1 in Lomé, with Clinton Jeptha's equaliser and a winner from Kparobo Ariehi sending them through. Nigeria went on to claim the trophy that year.

What victory would mean

A win on Wednesday would send the Flying Eagles into Sunday's final, where they would have the chance to defend the WAFU B U-20 title. More significantly, the champion of Sunday's final will also earn automatic qualification for the Africa U-20 Cup of Nations, to be hosted by Ghana.

For Nigeria, the stakes could hardly be higher — continental glory and a path to the U-20 AFCON are both within reach if they can overcome a Cote d'Ivoire side that has looked imperious so far in this tournament.
