Broos Hails Bafana Bafana's Historic World Cup Knockout Qualification
South Africa head coach Hugo Broos has celebrated Bafana Bafana's landmark 1-0 victory over Korea Republic, a result that sends them into the FIFA World Cup 2026 knockout stage for the first time in the nation's history.
Thapelo Maseko's goal in the 63rd minute, struck calmly into the near post after a sharp low cross from substitute Teshpang Moremi, proved the decisive moment at Monterrey Stadium.
South Africa's dominant display
Bafana Bafana controlled much of the first half, with Korea Republic goalkeeper Kim Seunggyu forced into multiple saves to deny Maseko, Thalente Mbatha, and Evidence Makgopa. Korea Republic's head coach Hong Myung-bo responded after the break by throwing on three substitutes — among them captain Son Heung-min — in search of an equaliser.
The tactical changes failed to unlock South Africa's defence, and Moremi's incisive run and delivery on the left flank gave Maseko the opening to fire home and settle the contest.
Broos proud of five-year journey
Speaking to FIFA.com, Broos was unambiguous in his assessment of the performance. "It is difficult to explain what this feels like. It is a fantastic experience. We played really well and created chances," he said.
The veteran Belgian coach also pointed to his team's tactical discipline. "Tactically we did really well and Korea Republic couldn't find the spaces that they wanted. We scored the goal and then it was 20 minutes with a very high heart rate," he added.
Broos reserved his warmest words for the bond built with his players over half a decade. "What we did in the last five years is amazing. When you work together for such a long time there is a connection and it is more than a relationship between coach and players — we have become friends. We just have to enjoy this," he said.
Canada await in the round of 32
Finishing as Group A runners-up, Bafana Bafana will now face Group B runners-up Canada in the Round of 32. The match is scheduled for 28 June in Los Angeles, promising a compelling contest as South Africa look to extend their historic World Cup run.
