South Africa coach Hugo Broos has described his side's qualification to the FIFA World Cup 2026 knockout stages as a historic achievement, following a hard-fought 1-0 victory over South Korea that secured a second-place finish in Group A.
Thapelo Maseko's 63rd-minute strike proved the decisive moment, lifting Bafana Bafana above the rest of the group. Mexico, who won all three of their group-stage matches, topped Group A, while South Africa claimed the runners-up spot to advance to the last 16 for the first time in their history.
Broos' emotional reaction
Speaking to Fox after the final whistle, Broos was visibly moved by the occasion, acknowledging both the difficulty of the match and the quality of his team's performance.
