Cape Verde Make History at FIFA World Cup with Crucial Draw Against Saudi Arabia

2 hours ago·2 min

Cape Verde have written themselves into the history books, becoming the first Blue Sharks side to advance to the FIFA World Cup knockout stages after holding Saudi Arabia to a goalless draw in Houston on Thursday.

The result was all the Blue Sharks needed. Spain's victory over Uruguay in the other Group H fixture confirmed Cape Verde's place as group runners-up, completing one of the most remarkable stories this tournament has produced.

A disciplined defensive display

Neither side was willing to gamble in a tight, cautious first half. Cape Verde dominated possession across long stretches but found it difficult to carve out genuine chances, while Saudi Arabia's periods of pressure were consistently absorbed by veteran goalkeeper Vozinha, who was largely untroubled.

The clearest chance before the break fell to Ryan Mendes, who drove into the penalty area from the right flank — only for Mohammed Al Owais to produce a sharp near-post save to keep the scores level.

News that Spain had taken the lead against Uruguay rippled through the Cape Verde supporters inside the stadium, and the atmosphere shifted as the second half began with the Blue Sharks sitting in the qualification places.

Substitutes add fresh impetus

Cape Verde grew in confidence after the restart. Kevin Pina came close with a long-range attempt that drifted just wide, and Jamiro Monteiro also tested Al Owais following a flowing team move.

Head coach Bubista introduced Hélio Varela, Nuno da Costa, Laros Duarte, and Garry Rodrigues from the bench, and the fresh legs gave Cape Verde renewed urgency in the closing stages.

Saudi Arabia threw men forward in search of the winner that would have sent them through, but the Cape Verde defensive partnership of Roberto Lopes and Logan Costa was immovable — clearing danger repeatedly as the final whistle drew closer.

A late chance to seal the win arrived deep in stoppage time when Rodrigues cut the ball back for Da Costa, who fired wide with the goal at his mercy. It did not matter.

The 0-0 result was enough. Cape Verde advance to the knockout rounds of a FIFA World Cup for the very first time, with an even greater challenge — and an even greater stage — now awaiting the Blue Sharks.
