Cape Verde Make History at World Cup 2026, Set Up Argentina Clash

1 hour ago·2 min

Cape Verde have written their name into football history, advancing to the round of 32 at the 2026 FIFA World Cup after holding Saudi Arabia to a goalless draw in their final Group H encounter at NRG Stadium in Houston, attended by 68,278 spectators.

The island nation, home to just 500,000 people, finish as Group H runners-up and will face Argentina on Friday, 3 July in Miami, with kick-off scheduled for 11pm.

A fairy tale debut

Cape Verde's first-ever World Cup appearance has captured the imagination of fans across the globe. Impressive performances against Spain and Uruguay in their opening two fixtures announced them as one of the tournament's most compelling stories.

Going into the final matchday, the Blue Sharks knew a favourable result could send them through to the knockout rounds — and there was even a scenario in which they could have topped the group. Ultimately, Spain's 1-0 victory elsewhere in Group H ensured Cape Verde finished second behind La Roja, but that does nothing to diminish a remarkable achievement.

Key moments in Houston

The match itself was tight and tense. Saudi Arabia suffered an early blow when defender Hassan Al Tambakti was stretchered off in the 33rd minute, replaced by Ali Lajami.

Saudi Arabia came closest to breaking the deadlock just before half-time, when goalkeeper Vozinha was called upon to collect Mohamed Kanno's header in added time. After the restart, Jamiro Monteiro almost put Cape Verde ahead in the 49th minute, only for Mohammed Al Owais to produce a fine save.

Al Owais came to Saudi Arabia's rescue again in the 74th minute, denying Laros Duarte with a superb stop. The most dramatic moment arrived in the 90+2', when Abdullah Al Hamddan had a clear opportunity to rescue Saudi Arabia's World Cup campaign — but Vozinha gathered comfortably to seal the draw and confirm Cape Verde's place in the next round.

Saudi Arabia, meanwhile, finish bottom of Group H and are eliminated from the tournament.
