The Liverpool legend, writing in his Daily Telegraph column, acknowledged that Carrick has done a solid job steadying a troubled club — but argued that winning the Premier League or the UEFA Champions League requires a different calibre of manager entirely.

"I don't think Manchester United will win a league title or a Champions League with Michael Carrick. I've said that openly, but I think it's right that he's got the job right now. His results are fantastic."

Carragher went further, suggesting that Carrick is effectively serving as a caretaker in all but name, holding the position until a marquee coach arrives — potentially in the summer of 2027.

"To most, it feels like Carrick remains an interim solution in all but name, entrusted with the keys to Old Trafford until a super coach can move in during the summer of 2027. Carrick will not see it that way, of course, but there are certain perceptions which will be tough to shake off."

Central to Carragher's argument is the idea that elite managers possess an intangible quality — a specific "X-factor" or aura — that Carrick is yet to demonstrate at the highest level.
