Jamie Carragher has delivered a scathing verdict on Liverpool's summer 2025 transfer window, warning that the club's £445 million spending splurge — which failed to prevent a fifth-place finish and the sacking of Arne Slot — could go down as the worst recruitment drive in Premier League history.

The Sky Sports pundit made his assessment on Monday Night Football following Liverpool's 2-2 draw at Newcastle on Sunday, a result that laid bare deep structural problems in Andoni Iraola's midfield set-up.

A midfield without balance

Carragher was unsparing in his analysis of Liverpool's central midfield, which featured Ryan Gravenberch and Dominik Szoboszlai at St James' Park, with Florian Wirtz deployed at No 10. Rather than forming a disciplined double pivot, Szoboszlai repeatedly pushed forward into attacking areas — leaving the midfield dangerously exposed.
