Carrick Concedes His Manchester United Future Is Uncertain Ahead of Roma Showdown

2 hours ago·2 min

Michael Carrick has offered a remarkably candid assessment of his precarious position at Manchester United, stopping short of any show of defiance as his side prepare to face Roma in a crucial Champions League fixture.

Speaking at his pre-match press conference, the 45-year-old gave little indication that he expected to survive in the role beyond the game. "I can't look into the future, I don't know what's gonna happen," Carrick said, in quotes reported by The Athletic. "I am really looking forward to the game tomorrow, you might think I'm crazy with the results we've had. Whatever happens will happen after that, whatever direction it goes in."

A club in freefall

The mood at Old Trafford has grown increasingly bleak. Manchester United have collected a mere seven points from their first nine Premier League matches and have suffered five consecutive games without a win across all competitions, along with an early exit from the Carabao Cup.

Damaging draws against ten-man sides Manchester City and Tottenham Hotspur compounded the misery, as did a defeat to Atletico Madrid in the Champions League — a result that opened the door to a dressing-room revolt.

Lisandro Martinez broke from the squad's unified front to publicly criticise the club's recruitment during the summer transfer window. Reports indicate his comments triggered a heated argument with a teammate on the flight back to Manchester, adding yet another layer of turbulence to an already fractured squad.

A new manager on the horizon

With Carrick's softer managerial style appearing unable to reverse the club's fortunes, confidence in his ability to engineer a turnaround is said to have evaporated within the Old Trafford hierarchy. Many observers believe the November international break presents the most likely window for the club to act.

National media reports have already identified several candidates to replace him, with Brighton's Fabian Hurzeler mentioned alongside experienced coaches Antonio Conte and Unai Emery.

Carrick's fatalistic tone — a far cry from the defiant press conference performances that managers typically deliver in times of pressure — has done little to quell suggestions that his time at Old Trafford is drawing to a close.
