Michael Carrick has spoken out in defence of Diogo Dalot after the Manchester United right-back was met with ironic cheers from supporters at Old Trafford when he was substituted during Sunday's remarkable 4-4 draw with Aston Villa.

The reaction from the home crowd suggested widespread frustration with Dalot's performance, but Carrick moved quickly to back his player, insisting the full-back gives everything he has for the club.

The 4-4 scoreline at Old Trafford underlined a turbulent afternoon for Manchester United, who surrendered leads and failed to hold off Aston Villa across a breathless 90 minutes.
