Michael Carrick has come out swinging against the VAR decision that he believes cost his Manchester United side a fair result in Sunday's Premier League derby against Manchester City at Old Trafford, which the visitors won 1-0.

The Norwegian striker Erling Haaland struck the decisive goal late on, converting at the back post after Josko Gvardiol's cross-cum-shot deflected into his path. The goal was initially ruled out for offside before a lengthy VAR review overturned the call, with officials determining that Patrick Dorgu had played Haaland onside.

The Fernandez offside controversy

Central to Carrick's frustration is the role of Enzo Fernandez, who was in an offside position as the goal was scored. Lisandro Martinez was stationed between Fernandez and Haaland, yet Fernandez threw himself at the ball in an attempt to convert with a diving header. Despite the intervention, match officials concluded that Fernandez had not interfered with play.

It is that explanation that Carrick found impossible to accept.
