The UEFA Champions League league phase is back in action, with Real Madrid, Manchester City, Borussia Dortmund, and Aston Villa among the sides kicking off their campaigns this week. But beyond simply making it through the group stage, there are compelling reasons for every club to chase the highest possible finish.
How the league phase works
All 36 participating clubs play eight matches in the league phase. The top eight sides advance automatically to the Round of 16, while clubs finishing ninth to 24th enter a play-off round. The bottom 12 are eliminated entirely.
Finishing in the top eight means bypassing the play-off round altogether — granting those clubs two fewer matches and a precious additional rest period before the knock-out stage begins.
The financial stakes
Every club in the league phase receives a guaranteed participation fee of approximately €18.5 million — the baseline for all 36 sides. From there, the figures climb sharply based on performance.
Each win in the league phase earns a club an estimated €2 million, while a draw brings in €750,000. A side that wins all eight of their league phase fixtures would add €16 million on top of the base fee, bringing their pre-bonus total to around €34.5 million.
Two additional bonus pools push the potential earnings even higher. Clubs finishing first through eighth pocket a further €2 million, while those in ninth through 16th earn €1 million extra.
A separate ranking bonus pool worth approximately €183 million is divided into 666 shares. The club that tops the league phase table receives 36 shares — worth close to €10 million — with each lower position receiving one fewer share than the one above it.
A club that wins every league phase match and finishes first overall could therefore earn an estimated €46.5 million from the league phase alone, according to 2025-26 financial data.
Home advantage and knock-out seeding
League phase finish also determines the quality of a club's knock-out opposition. In the play-off round, positions nine through 24 are paired in inverse order — ninth faces 24th, 10th faces 23rd, and so on.
The rewards are even greater for the top four. Clubs finishing first and second play their home leg first in every knock-out round through to the final, while those in third and fourth carry home advantage into the Round of 16 and the quarter-finals.
With financial rewards, rest advantages, and favourable draw positions all tied to league phase standing, every point in this stage of the competition carries genuine weight.
