Charlton Athletic Seal Season-Long Loan Deal for Nigeria Goalkeeper Arthur Okonkwo
Charlton Athletic have secured a season-long loan for Nigeria international goalkeeper Arthur Okonkwo from Wrexham, with the deal confirmed by Italian transfer expert Fabrizio Romano.
The move comes after Okonkwo fell to third choice at Wrexham following the club's summer recruitment drive. Wrexham signed Anthony Patterson from Sunderland in a club-record deal worth around £8 million, and with experienced stopper Danny Ward also on the books, Okonkwo found himself pushed out of contention for regular football.
From Arsenal academy to the Championship
Okonkwo came through the Arsenal academy before gaining experience on loan at Crewe Alexandra and Austrian side Sturm Graz. He first arrived at Wrexham on a temporary basis in September 2023 and proved instrumental in the club's back-to-back promotions from League Two to the Championship.
Wrexham made the deal permanent in June 2024 on a three-year contract following the expiry of his Arsenal deal. Across his time with the Red Dragons — covering both his loan and permanent spells — he has made over 100 appearances, kept a healthy number of clean sheets, and contributed to two historic promotions.
Wages and rival interest
The 24-year-old's reported salary of around £1 million per year had initially complicated loan discussions, with Derby County and Bolton Wanderers both linked earlier in the summer window. Charlton ultimately agreed terms, landing a goalkeeper with proven Championship pedigree.
Okonkwo has just one year remaining on his Wrexham contract and is set to become a free agent next summer, making this loan a critical period for him to demonstrate his worth and weigh his options.
Super Eagles debut
Having previously represented England at youth level, Okonkwo switched international allegiance to Nigeria and earned his first senior caps for the Super Eagles in the 2026 Unity Cup. He started in goal during Nigeria's 2-0 victory over Zimbabwe and their 3-0 win against Jamaica, cementing his place in the national setup.
