Chelsea Break Club Record with £117m Deal for Aston Villa's Morgan Rogers

Chelsea have agreed a club-record £117m transfer fee to sign England midfielder Morgan Rogers from Aston Villa, smashing their previous highest spend and setting a new benchmark for an English player.
The 23-year-old is set to put pen to paper on a six-year contract at Stamford Bridge, with an option to extend for a further year. Rogers will undergo his medical on Monday after returning from international duty at the FIFA World Cup 2026.
A new record for English football
The fee surpasses the £116m that Manchester City agreed with Nottingham Forest earlier this summer for England midfielder Elliot Anderson, making Rogers the most expensive English player in transfer history.
The move also eclipses Chelsea's previous club record, which stood at £107m following the arrival of Argentina midfielder Enzo Fernandez from Benfica in 2023.
Rogers' rise to the top
Rogers began his career at Manchester City before joining Middlesbrough. Aston Villa brought him to the Premier League in January 2024 from the Championship side, and he wasted no time making his mark.
In 85 league appearances for manager Unai Emery's side, Rogers scored 21 goals — a return that underlined his quality as one of English football's most dynamic midfielders. He was also a key member of the Villa squad that lifted the UEFA Europa League trophy last season.
On the international stage, Rogers has earned 21 senior caps for England, finding the net once, and played in six matches for the Three Lions during this summer's World Cup.
Alonso builds his squad
The signing represents a major statement of intent from new Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso, who is reshaping the squad ahead of the upcoming Premier League campaign.
