Chelsea Reject Leeds United's Opening Loan Offer for Mudryk

Chelsea have turned down an opening season-long loan approach from Leeds United for winger Mykhailo Mudryk, with the Yorkshire club's initial offer falling well short of what Chelsea consider acceptable.
Talks between the two clubs are continuing, however, and Mudryk is understood to be enthusiastic about a potential move to Elland Road. The 25-year-old has already agreed in principle to leave Stamford Bridge for the season as he looks to rebuild his match fitness after an extended absence from the game.
Mudryk's return from ban
Mudryk spent 20 months on the sidelines after testing positive for meldonium, a substance banned in professional football. His suspension came to an end in July, and he has since been involved in Chelsea's pre-season activities under new manager Xabi Alonso, making a number of substitute appearances during the club's tour.
In conversations with the club, Mudryk has made clear his preference is to stay in the Premier League. Clubs from Italy and Strasbourg — Chelsea's sister club under the BlueCo ownership umbrella — have also registered interest, but the Ukrainian forward is drawn to remaining in England.
Why Leeds lead the race
Leeds have positioned themselves as the frontrunners by agreeing to take Mudryk on loan without a purchase option attached. This arrangement suits Chelsea, as it allows them to retain full control over the winger's long-term future while having his wages covered during the loan spell.
The Whites have been active in the transfer market this summer, adding attacker Harry Wilson from Fulham, centre-back Tarik Muharemovic from Sassuolo, goalkeeper James Trafford from Manchester City, and defender Nico Elvedi from Borussia Monchengladbach.
Other clubs in the picture
Brentford were considered a serious option for Mudryk but stumbled when they insisted on including a permanent purchase clause — a condition Chelsea rejected outright. The Bees have a history with the Ukrainian, having attempted to sign him before Chelsea brought him to Stamford Bridge from Shakhtar Donetsk for an initial £61 million in 2023.
Coventry City have also made their interest known, and a move to Strasbourg has not been ruled out. Chelsea are additionally exploring the idea of sending midfielder Dario Essugo to the French club as part of a broader arrangement.
Chelsea striker Liam Delap was previously linked with Leeds as well, though that interest has since faded. While the possibility of Mudryk remaining at Chelsea has not been entirely dismissed, it is considered the least likely outcome.
