Chelsea have completed the signing of left-back Pep Chavarria from Rayo Vallecano in a deal worth approximately £16.3m, with a further £1.7m in potential add-ons, tying the 28-year-old to Stamford Bridge on a five-year contract.

A long road to the top flight

Chavarria's route to one of Europe's elite clubs was far from straightforward. Born in Figueres in Catalonia, north-eastern Spain, he honed his craft in the lower tiers of Spanish football before a move to Real Zaragoza in 2020 gave him his first taste of professional football at a bigger club.

After two seasons in Spain's second division, he earned the chance to step up to La Liga with Rayo Vallecano in 2022 — at the age of 24, an age when many players are already established at the highest level.

Over four seasons at Vallecas, Chavarria made 125 appearances and grew into a dependable top-flight full-back, blending defensive aggression with the physicality the role demands. Last season he scored once and registered three assists across all competitions, creating 27 chances from open play in La Liga alone. He also featured in the Conference League final, where Rayo suffered a 1-0 defeat by Crystal Palace.

Alonso's target

Chavarria's move to Chelsea owes much to manager Xabi Alonso, who came face-to-face with the full-back last season when he was in charge of Real Madrid. In a goalless draw at Vallecas in November, Chavarria delivered an outstanding defensive display, handling the pressure of elite opposition with composure and discipline — leaving a lasting impression on Alonso.

When Alonso was appointed Chelsea manager, Chavarria quickly became a priority target. Alongside new right-back Marco Palestra, who joined Chelsea for £47m from Atalanta in July, the arrival of Chavarria gives Alonso the tools to rebuild the wing-back system that powered Bayer Leverkusen's Bundesliga title triumph in 2024. His signing also fills the gap left by Marc Cucurella, who departed for Real Madrid in June for £51.8m.

A deal that proved difficult to close

Securing Chavarria was far from simple. Rayo Vallecano initially insisted Chelsea would need to trigger his £42.4m release clause in full, with multiple BBC Sport sources describing negotiations as "complicated." The Madrid club believed that figure was fair, arguing that Chavarria's underlying statistics placed him at a level comparable to Cucurella.

Rayo's resistance was also underpinned by financial strength. Their player-trading model has delivered consistent profits, leaving the club in a position to rebuff offers in a manner more commonly associated with Spain's traditional giants — Real Madrid, Barcelona, and Atletico Madrid. A further complication was that any profit from the sale would attract a 25 percent tax charge, reducing the net return and hardening Rayo's negotiating stance. Ultimately, Chelsea found a formula that worked, landing one of La Liga's most consistent full-backs at a fraction of his release clause value.
